Google’s Phone App Expands “Take a Message” Feature in Japan

Key Points of This Article
  • The voicemail feature “Take a Message” (formerly “Message leaving”) for the “Phone by Google” app appears to have expanded its rollout for the Japanese/Japanese language environment.
  • “Take a Message” is a voicemail feature that prompts callers to leave a voice message via a “greeting” when you miss or decline a call.
  • A wider rollout of “Take a Message” in Japan was observed following the “Phone by Google” version v222 update, which was released around Thursday, May 21, 2026.

The voicemail feature “Take a Message,” included in the default Google Pixel phone app “Phone by Google,” appears to be rolling out more widely to the Japanese/Japanese language environment.

“Take a Message” in the “Phone by Google” app is a voicemail feature that prompts callers to leave a voice message via a “greeting” if you miss or decline a call. Messages recorded using “Take a Message” are stored on the Google Pixel device and transcribed, allowing you to check the content of the voice message as text.

Additionally, the “Take a Message” feature includes functionality to detect spam calls based on voice messages recorded from missed or declined calls that are not in your contacts. It is also available on paired Bluetooth-connected devices, such as the Google Pixel Watch 2 and later models.

“Take a Message” was originally launched on October 2, 2025, for the Google Pixel 6 series and later, targeting four countries: the US, UK, Australia, and Ireland. It was subsequently launched in Canada, and is now officially available in five countries.

In mid-May 2026, we confirmed the rollout of “Take a Message” in Japan. Initially, however, it appeared to be a very limited test rollout for specific Google Pixel devices registered as “beta testers.”

However, with the “Phone by Google” version v222 update released around Thursday, May 21, 2026, a wider rollout in the Japanese environment was confirmed. The official “Phone app Help” page titled “Use ‘Take a Message’ to handle missed or declined calls” still only lists the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Ireland. Therefore, it is likely that this is still a beta rollout for Japan-based Google Pixel devices registered as “beta testers,” but it is certainly more widely available than it was in mid-May 2026.

“Take a Message”

“Take a Message” in the “Phone by Google” app is a basic voicemail feature that prompts callers to leave a voice message via a “greeting” when you miss or decline a call.

The “Take a Message” settings allow you to turn the feature on or off and customize your “greeting.” The default “standard greeting” says: “The person you are trying to reach is not available. Please leave a message after the tone.” However, users can also record and use their own original “greeting.”

If “Take a Message” is ON and you do not answer a call after 7 rings, “Take a Message” activates. The caller hears the “greeting” and is prompted to leave a voice message. This works exactly like a standard voicemail service. Note that, currently, it does not seem possible to customize the timing of when “Take a Message” activates.

Once a voice message is received, a missed call notification appears along with a transcription of the message. Tapping the missed call notification allows you to read the full transcription.

The transcription of the received voice message is also displayed in your “Phone by Google” call history alongside the missed call entry. You can, of course, play back the recorded voice message and share it as an .m4a file.

That is “Take a Message” for “Phone by Google” in a nutshell. It is not overly complex; it is a very basic, convenient, and useful voicemail feature that also includes transcription.
