On Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Google’s video service YouTube announced new measures to protect children in the digital world, including a scroll time limit feature for its short-form video content, “YouTube Shorts.”
The “YouTube Shorts” scroll time limit allows parents to restrict viewing time on supervised accounts. Parents can choose from [0 min], [15 min], [30 min], [45 min], [1 hour], [2 hours], or [OFF].
Additionally, as an industry-first feature, YouTube is introducing a “Timer Zero” function that makes only “YouTube Shorts” unwatchable. This allows children to focus on homework or study while watching educational YouTube videos, while preventing access to the more addictive “YouTube Shorts” content.
Furthermore, on accounts under parental supervision, custom reminders for “Bedtime” and “Take a break” can now be set, building upon the existing default wellbeing protection features for teens.
