YouTube Premium Lite Now Supports Background Play and Downloads

Key Points of This Article
  • YouTube has announced the addition of background play and downloads (saving videos for offline playback) to its “YouTube Premium Lite” subscription service.
  • Initially, the service primarily focused on ad-free viewing; features like ad-free YouTube Music, background play, and offline downloads for music-related content were not supported.
  • In a surprising update, however, the service now supports both background playback and temporary video downloads for offline viewing.

On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, Google’s video platform YouTube announced the rollout of background play and downloads (temporary video storage for offline playback) for its “YouTube Premium Lite” subscription service, which launched in Japan on Friday, September 26, 2025.

“YouTube Premium Lite” is the “Lite” version of the YouTube Premium subscription service. Originally, its core feature was ad-free viewing, while features such as ad-free YouTube Music, background playback, offline downloads, and extra functionalities (like Jump Ahead, Queue, and Continue Watching) were excluded.

However, it will now support temporary video downloads for offline playback and background play. This means the primary differences from the full “YouTube Premium” are now limited to ad-free YouTube Music and certain additional features.

Furthermore, compared to the 1,280 yen monthly fee (tax included) for “YouTube Premium,” “YouTube Premium Lite” is priced at 780 yen per month (tax included)—a 500 yen savings.
