On Thursday, May 28, 2026 (local time), Google’s video service, YouTube, launched a new feature called “On-the-go” for its YouTube Premium subscribers.
The new “On-the-go” feature for YouTube Premium is specifically designed for audio-only playback of videos, allowing users to enjoy content similarly to a podcast.
Please note that this feature is currently available exclusively on the Android version of the YouTube app. It is scheduled to roll out to the iOS version of the YouTube app within the next few months.
When you are watching a video with your device unlocked and movement is detected for 60 seconds or more, a notification will appear prompting you to switch to “On-the-go” mode. You can also manually switch to this mode directly from the video playback screen.
Other new features for YouTube Premium members include “Smart downloads” for seamless playback speed adjustment and podcast search integration via the Google AI “Gemini” feature, “Ask Music.” However, please be aware that the automatic playback speed adjustment is currently limited to English-language videos, and “Ask Music” is not yet available in Japan or for the Japanese language.
