Topics” is a feature implemented in the Android and iOS versions of the YouTube app that uses Google’s AI “Gemini” to automatically categorize posted comments.

The “Topics” feature in the YouTube app for Android and iOS works by having Gemini group similar comments together into “Topics” when a video has hundreds or thousands of comments, providing an overview of what viewers are saying. Initially launched for English videos and comments, the supported languages are gradually being expanded.

We have now confirmed the expansion of “Topics” to Japan and the Japanese language in the YouTube app for Android and iOS. For videos with a large volume of comments (hundreds or thousands), a new “Topics” section will be available in the comments tab, alongside the traditional “Top comments” and “Newest first” sorting options.

While “Topics” appears when a significant number of comments (hundreds or thousands) are posted, the specific minimum threshold for them to appear has not been disclosed. Additionally, there is currently no setting available to turn “Topics” off.

Furthermore, “Topics” has not yet been rolled out to the web version of YouTube.
