On Monday, March 2, 2026, Google released the latest update for “What’s new in Google Home,” the official source for new features and bug fixes deployed every few weeks for the “Google Home” smart home service.
The update published on March 2, 2026, includes four main items: the addition of new “Starters” and “Conditions” for “Automations” in the Android and iOS versions of the Google Home app, expanded support for the “Google Nest × Yale Lock” smart lock, new “Gemini for Home (Early Access)” capabilities, and the March 2026 software update for “Nest Wifi Pro.” Note that the “Google Nest × Yale Lock” and “Nest Wifi Pro” are not yet available in the Japanese market.
Support for New “Starters” and “Conditions”
Three new types of support have been added to “Automations” in the Android/iOS Google Home app as “Starters” and “Conditions”: security system arming state, device connection state, and device docking state.
Users can now set up “Automations” based on scenarios such as “if the security system is armed,” “if a device is connected,” or “if the Pixel Tablet is not docked to the Charging Speaker Dock by 9:00 AM.”
Expanded Support for “Google Nest × Yale Lock”
With the expanded support for the “Google Nest × Yale Lock,” features previously available only in Public Preview—such as checking lock history, receiving notifications, monitoring battery levels, managing passcodes, scheduling guest access, and changing advanced settings—have now transitioned to General Availability.
These settings and modifications for the “Google Nest × Yale Lock” can now be managed directly from the Android and iOS versions of the Google Home app.
New “Gemini for Home (Early Access)” Features
As for the new “Gemini for Home (Early Access)” features, the underlying AI model has been upgraded to a newer “Gemini” model, providing improved accuracy and various enhancements.
■ Improved targeting for smart home devices, ensuring intended devices are controlled correctly
• Better separation for users with multiple homes • For example, commands like “turn off all lights” or “turn on all lights” are now limited to the current home only • Improved targeting accuracy for room and home-wide queries, including unassigned devices • For example, the command “turn off the kitchen” will now only apply to lights, preventing unassigned devices from being incorrectly grouped with general room commands • Better classification for devices with unique names • For example, a device named “Table Glow” will be correctly identified as a light based on manufacturer metadata (allowing it to respond to commands like “turn on the light” even if “light” is not in the name)
■ Gemini for Home can now explicitly use the home address defined in the Google Home app to provide highly relevant responses for weather, local news, and more
■ Increased reliability and accuracy for commands related to Notes and Lists, Reminders, Calendar, Timers, and Alarms
■ Upgraded to a new Gemini model for better response quality to information queries
■ Reduced instances of cutting the user off while speaking, making conversations in “Gemini Live” smoother
■ Improved reliability when launching user-created “Automations” by voice • For example, saying “Hey Google, party time” will reliably trigger the pre-configured “Party Time” automation
■ Better reliability for playing newly released songs correctly
■ Google Home Premium (Advanced) members can now use “Live Search” to understand their home status via live camera streaming
