The “What’s new in Google Home” update released on Monday, January 12, 2026, reveals new features coming to the Android and iOS versions of the “Google Home” app. It appears that “Automations” will be significantly expanded with the addition of many new “Triggers” and “Actions.”
In addition, feedback will become easier for “AI Descriptions”—a feature where Gemini-powered cameras summarize recorded content. This is part of “Gemini for Home,” a Google AI “Gemini” integration that has not yet been rolled out in Japan.
■ New “Triggers”
• Media Playback: Enables automations such as “If the TV is on, then (turn on the lights).” • Security State: Set the security system’s transition to “Armed” mode as a trigger. • Smart Appliance State: Set statuses such as “Running,” “Paused,” “Error,” or “Stopped” for washing machines, dryers, coffee makers, etc., as triggers.
■ New “Actions”
• ON/OFF for Specific Devices: Control the power for specific devices like coffee makers. • Security: Set the security system to “Armed” mode (Disarming is not yet supported). • Blinds/Curtains: Open and close operations are now possible. • Robot Vacuums: Detailed commands like “Pause,” “Resume,” and “Dock (Charge)” are now available. • Smart Appliance Operation: “Start,” “Stop,” “Pause,” and “Resume” are now possible for washing machines, dryers, and coffee makers. • Lighting Effects: Added a “Stop” action for smart bulb lighting effects.
■ Easier Feedback for “AI Descriptions”
