Nikkei Report on PayPay Supporting Google Pay Touch Payments Removed

  • On September 25, 2025, The Nikkei’s electronic edition reported that “PayPay” would support NFC (Type-A/B) tap-to-pay in the latter half of 2025 through a partnership between PayPay Corporation and Google.
  • However, the report was deleted the same day before it could spread widely.
  • It is presumed that PayPay Corporation or Google requested the removal of the report.

On Thursday, September 25, 2025, The Nikkei reported in its online “electronic edition” that “PayPay” will support NFC (Type-A/B) tap-to-pay in the latter half of 2025 through a partnership between PayPay Corporation and Google.

This is quite significant news, as it marks a new NFC tap-to-pay capability for “PayPay,” where QR code payments are currently mainstream. Of course, this was not an official announcement from PayPay Corporation or Google, but rather a report by The Nikkei.

However, the report was deleted on the same day before it could spread widely. It is presumed that PayPay Corporation or Google requested that the content of the report be removed.

On this site, we have also discussed in recent articles the possibility of “PayPay Money,” PayPay’s balance service that supports bank account transfers, being integrated with “Google Pay,” the cashless payment feature of the Android digital wallet service “Google Wallet.” This means the integration of “PayPay” for NFC tap-to-pay through “Google Pay” is highly plausible.

In addition, “au PAY (au PAY Prepaid Card)” by KDDI, “d-Payment” by NTT Docomo, and “Rakuten Pay” by Rakuten may also be included. There is a possibility that these four QR code payment services, including “PayPay,” will be integrated into “Google Pay” as NFC tap-to-pay options.

This is likely part of a new “Google Wallet” project for the Japanese market, led by Google.
