Pixel 9a Gets New “Scam Detection” Settings, Though Still Unavailable

Key Points of This Article
  • A new “Scam Detection” setting has been added to the “Phone by Google” app on the Pixel 9a.
  • It is not yet available for use at this time.
  • This may be a preparation for a wider rollout to regions outside the U.S.

The “Scam Detection” feature (originally launched as “Fraud Detection”) for the “Phone by Google” app, the default dialer on Google Pixel devices, began its rollout in Japan between late December 2025 and early January 2026.

Currently, “Scam Detection” has been rolled out to Google Pixel devices from the Pixel 9 onwards, excluding the Pixel 9a. On the other hand, the standard “Call Recording” feature has been made available for Google Pixel devices including and below the Pixel 9a.

In the midst of this, a new “Scam Detection” setting has appeared within the “Phone by Google” app on the Pixel 9a. However, it cannot be used at this moment.

This is because “Scam Detection” in the “Phone by Google” app for the Pixel 9a is actually already available in the United States. In countries outside the U.S., the “Call Recording” feature is provided instead.

That said, since the “Scam Detection” setting was previously not even present in the Japanese environment for the Pixel 9a, it is possible that as “Android AICore (Gemini Nano)” continues to evolve, “Scam Detection” might eventually be rolled out to Pixel 9a devices in regions outside the U.S. as well.

In short, the addition of this “Scam Detection” setting in the “Phone by Google” app on the Pixel 9a may well be a preparation for a wider rollout to regions outside the U.S.
