On Tuesday, May 19, 2026 (local time), during the “Google I/O 2026” developer event, Google announced an expansion of its digital watermarking technology, “SynthID.” This update adds support for “C2PA” (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) Content Credentials to videos captured using the “Pixel Camera” app on the Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 series devices.
“C2PA Content Credentials” are, in essence, encrypted international standard metadata that provide a history of how media was created or edited, including information on whether AI was utilized. The Pixel 10 series, from its initial launch, has been equipped to attach these credentials to photos taken with the Pixel Camera app, serving as proof that the media was captured by a camera and remains unedited. Notably, this makes the Pixel 10 series the first in the world to support this standard.
Moving forward, C2PA Content Credentials will also be applied to videos recorded with the Pixel Camera app on the Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 series. For the Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series, this update is also expected to bring C2PA credential support to photos captured via the Pixel Camera app.
Google has announced that this rollout of C2PA Content Credentials for photos and videos captured on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series will occur within the next few weeks.
