On Friday, July 10, 2026, Google released a video explaining the mechanism behind the “Caller ID & spam” feature—a fake call detection function implemented in the default Android phone app, “Phone by Google.”
In recent years, the emergence of generative AI has led to an increase in sophisticated scam calls using “AI voice cloning” to mimic acquaintances and “caller ID spoofing” to disguise phone numbers. To combat these increasingly complex scams, the “Phone by Google” app includes the “Caller ID & spam” detection feature.
The “Caller ID & spam” feature uses “RCS (Rich Communication Services)” to automatically verify the caller’s identity in the background when both the caller and the recipient are using the “Phone by Google” app. Since “Phone by Google” is linked to a Google Account, it can verify in the background whether the call is genuinely coming from the person associated with that phone number.
If caller ID spoofing is detected, a warning appears on the screen, prompting the user to end the call immediately. Please note that to utilize this feature, it is not enough to simply turn on the “Caller ID & spam” setting in the “Phone by Google” app; you must also have the “Contacts” and “Google Messages” apps installed.
The “Caller ID & spam” settings can be found within the “Caller ID & spam” menu inside the “Phone by Google” app.

The “Caller ID & spam” feature in the “Phone by Google” app has started its global rollout beginning with Google Pixel devices, with plans to expand to other Android devices as well. In addition, Google plans to strengthen its defense against phone scams by deploying “Scam Detection,” which identifies fraud based on conversation patterns, and an automatic call-termination feature for bank impersonation scams.
