Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta
この記事のポイント
  • Nothing, a British tech venture, has released the open beta version of its next-generation custom OS, “Nothing OS 5.0,” for two models: the “Phone (2a)” and “Phone (2a) Plus.”
  • Users can easily install the update by downloading the “Nothing Beta Hub” app v2.0 (available as an APK file) onto their target devices.
  • However, since it is a beta OS, potential bugs and issues should be expected.

British tech venture Nothing Technology (“Nothing”) released the open beta version of its next-generation custom OS, “Nothing OS 5.0,” for two of its Android device models, the “Phone (2a)” and “Phone (2a) Plus,” on Thursday, October 22, 2026 local time.

The “Nothing OS 5.0” open beta is an optional, beta-stage operating system, exactly as the name suggests. It can be easily installed by downloading the “Nothing Beta Hub” app v2.0—available as an APK file on the official “Nothing OS 5.0” website—onto a compatible device.

However, because this is a beta release, bugs and unexpected issues may occur. For this reason, installation is entirely optional and performed at your own risk.

Important Notes on the “Nothing OS 5.0” Open Beta
  • While media and some community reviewers may showcase a revamped home screen from a separate early preview build, this feature is still under development and is not yet included in the “Nothing OS 5.0” open beta
  • The redesigned home screen and “Micrographics” watch face are scheduled to be released with the official stable version starting in October 2026
  • The “Essential Apps Builder” is currently in early beta, with access rolling out gradually (if you do not have access yet, you can join the waitlist)
  • Updates for “Essential Space” will be rolled out separately via the “Google Play Store” (“MCP” support is planned for October 2026, and the redesigned capture feature for November 2026)
  • Real-time translation for “Essential Voice” is also scheduled to arrive later this year
  • When installing via the “Nothing Beta Hub” app, it may take up to 5 minutes for the open beta update to appear
  • The access channel for the “Nothing Beta Hub” app will remain open for 7 days
Important Notes on the “Nothing OS 5.0” Open Beta

“Nothing OS 5.0” is built on the next-generation Android OS, “Android 17,” and introduces a variety of new features. The open beta version of “Nothing OS 5.0” was first released for the “Phone (3)”, followed by the “Phone (4a) Pro”, and later the “Phone (4a),” “Phone (3a) Pro,” and “Phone (3a)”.

Now, it has been released for the “Phone (2a)” and “Phone (2a) Plus.” Over the coming months, the list of compatible devices for the “Nothing OS 5.0” open beta will continue to expand, alongside the sequential rollout of the official stable version. The official stable version of “Nothing OS 5.0” has already begun rolling out to the “Phone (3)” starting Monday, October 12, 2026.

However, “Nothing OS 5.0” will not be provided for the second-generation Nothing Android device, the “Phone (2)” (which has reached the end of its 3-year major OS update support window following its release), nor for the “CMF Phone 1” launched in 2024.

Timings are indicative and subject to change. Rollout will be phased by region and carrier where applicable, Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 have reached the end of major software support and will not receive Nothing OS 5.0.

“Nothing OS 5.0” Release Schedule

Revamped Design

“Nothing OS 5.0” brings a complete design overhaul, refreshing system-wide typography, icons, spacing, textures, and motions.

One of the most significant changes is the adoption of “Geist,” a new system typeface. Selected by the design team to enhance legibility while maintaining the unique personality of “Nothing OS,” it plays a key role in improving visual consistency across settings screens, widgets, menus, and the entire system.

Alongside this, the settings menu has been refined with revised icons, spacing, and corner radii, while frequently used items are now grouped together to improve visibility and usability. Status bar icons feature a brand-new design, displaying state changes like signal strength and battery levels with clearer animations. Additionally, the camera app icon and control scheme have been overhauled—such as holding QR code recognition results on screen—resulting in improved day-to-day usability.

In the “Nothing Gallery” app, photo sorting, filtering, and album screens have been redesigned, incorporating a new design language utilizing translucent materials throughout.

Wallpaper-Synced Personalization Features

“Nothing OS 5.0” introduces a new personalization feature that automatically adjusts the color schemes of app icons and widgets based on the tones of your wallpaper.

On the lock screen, two new clock faces have been added: “Gooey,” featuring a fluid shape, and “Micrographics,” which bundles dates, weather, and schedule info. Both support color settings that reflect the wallpaper. On the home screen, a new batch-editing feature allows users to select multiple icons and widgets at once and move them across pages together, reducing the hassle of rearranging layouts.

Furthermore, several new widgets and apps have been introduced, including “Away Time,” a new widget that visualizes the time spent away from interacting with your smartphone; “Collector,” which displays collections of photos gathered from the camera or “Nothing Gallery” app on your home or lock screen; “Glyph,” a dedicated app to centrally manage Glyph Interface-related features, sounds, and schedules; and the “Glyph Timer” widget, which lets you launch a timer directly from the home screen.

Please note that the home screen applying the new translucent design theme and the “Micrographics” clock face are still under development and are therefore not included in the “Nothing OS 5.0” open beta. They are scheduled to launch with the official stable version of “Nothing OS 5.0.”

UI Acceleration

In “Nothing OS 5.0,” day-to-day responsiveness—such as app launching, scrolling, touch tracking, and multitasking—has been improved, resulting in a faster UI.

By optimizing background management, more resources are allocated to apps currently in use, while frequently used apps remain on standby in the background, reducing the frequency of reloads. In addition, reversing a gesture mid-action now causes the animation to smoothly play in reverse, achieving more natural motion across apps, folders, widgets, and the multitasking screen as a whole.

The Bluetooth “Quick Settings Tile” has also been redesigned, allowing users to search for, connect to, or disconnect from nearby devices with a single tap.

“Essential AI” Feature Updates

As part of the updates to “Essential AI” features, processing speed in the voice memo feature “Essential Voice” has been enhanced, providing cleaner and better-formatted transcriptions.

The system now automatically distinguishes between content that should be kept as paragraphs and tasks or requirements that should be bulleted, and spoken words appear as live text in real time. Furthermore, a multi-language “Real-Time Translation” feature is scheduled to be added later this year.

In “Essential Space,” a new “Smart Collections” feature will automatically suggest relevant items from existing saved content when creating a new collection, alongside a function that proposes creating a new collection when common topics are found across multiple saved items.

Additionally, support for the “Model Context Protocol (MCP)” has been introduced, allowing compatible external AI platforms to search and reference saved content within “Essential Space.” “MCP” will be read-only upon initial release, with its rollout via “Google Play” planned for October 2026.

Moreover, the “Essential Apps Builder” app has been newly added, enabling users to build “Essential Apps”—which previously could only be created on the web—directly on their smartphones. With the “Essential Apps Builder” app, simply describing the tool you want to create in natural language allows you to build widgets and tools to place on your home screen without writing any code.

New “Android 17” Features

“Nothing OS 5.0” also incorporates a wide range of new features implemented from the underlying next-generation Android OS, “Android 17.”

These improvements span a wide variety of enhancements, including: a “Split Mode” that lets you swipe left or right to separate the notification panel and “Quick Settings Tiles”; enhanced “Quick Share” functionality allowing file sending and receiving via QR codes and browsers regardless of iOS or Android; a floating control panel for easier operation during screen recording; a privacy indicator in the status bar color-coded into three colors (green, blue, and yellow) for location sharing and AI data processing; “Live Info” which displays progress for supported apps in a capsule shape in the status bar; “Noto 3D” 3D emojis with added dimensional expression; an “Extended Dark Theme” allowing dark mode application settings per app; “Assistant Volume” adjustable independently from media volume; “HDR Brightness Correction” which brightens only the highlights of HDR photos and videos without raising overall screen brightness; and a revamped “Recent Apps” screen featuring a pill-shaped menu combining controls like “Split Screen” and “App Info.”
