At the developer event “Google I/O 2026” held in May 2026, Google announced the first major upgrade to the “Google Search” box in over 25 years.
We have now confirmed that this major upgrade for the Google Search box began rolling out to the iOS version of the Google app around mid-June 2026. The app version is v425.6.
With this major update—the first in over 25 years—the Google Search box has been revamped into an intelligent “AI mode” search bar. It allows users to perform searches using not only text but also a variety of other input formats, including images, files, videos, and Chrome tabs. In essence, the Google Search box has been upgraded to an “AI mode” search interface.
Please note that as of now, we have not yet confirmed the rollout of this major upgrade to the search box in the Android version of the Google app.
