On Thursday, August 13, 2026 (local time), Google announced and began rolling out “Sheets Canvas” as a new feature for “Gemini in Google Sheets,” the Google AI-integrated spreadsheet service within Google Sheets.
“Sheets Canvas” is a dynamic, read-write layer that overlays directly on top of spreadsheet data. Without any knowledge of formulas or programming, you can simply give natural language instructions like “Create an easy-to-read learning progress tracker,” and data-based “mini-apps” will be automatically generated within the spreadsheet.
Examples of how “Sheets Canvas” can be used include a learning tracker for managing assignment progress, a dashboard for comparing fantasy football player stats, and an automatically generated seating chart for wedding guests.
The created “mini-apps” are designed to sync in real-time with the original spreadsheet. Edits made on the “mini-app” side are automatically reflected in the spreadsheet, and changes made in the spreadsheet are automatically reflected in the “mini-app.”
You can also adjust the layout, design, and functionality of the “mini-app” at any time by giving additional instructions to “Gemini.” Furthermore, because “Sheets Canvas” is saved as a tab just like a regular sheet, sharing it with collaborators is as easy as ever.
“Sheets Canvas” has begun rolling out globally, starting in English environments, for Google Workspace business accounts as well as Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra members. “Sheets Canvas” is an eagerly awaited new feature, and we look forward to its eventual rollout in Japanese as well.
