On Monday, October 5, 2026 (local time), Google announced the rollout of enhanced support for Markdown files (.md / .markdown) in its groupware service, Google Workspace. This update introduces native viewing, editing, and co-editing in Google Docs, along with preview features in Google Drive.
Markdown is a text format that allows users to write headings, bullet points, tables, and other structures using simple symbols. Because it handles structured content while keeping file sizes small, it is also widely used for inputs and outputs in large language models (LLMs).
Previously, working with Markdown files in Google Docs required importing and converting them into document format. This process often led to formatting issues, lost comments, and file fragmentation.
With this enhanced Markdown support in Google Docs and Google Drive, users can now edit Markdown files natively in Google Docs without altering their format, while taking advantage of real-time co-editing and commenting features. Because file conversion is no longer necessary, users and AI agents can now collaboratively edit the same Markdown file, for example.
Additionally, Google Drive now supports previewing Markdown files in a rendered state. Links are clickable, and tables are displayed in a formatted layout, making it much easier to check contents directly within Google Drive.
