Google Wallet, the Android digital wallet management service, is expected to undergo a major renewal with the addition of new features. This is based on an analysis of the HTML code on the official “Check supported payment methods (Japan)” page of the Google Wallet Help site, which revealed several upcoming changes: the addition of new transit IC services like “ICOCA” from JR West and “TOICA” from JR Central, as well as “Kitaca” from JR Hokkaido and “nimoca” from Nishi-Nippon Railroad’s subsidiary Nimoca Co., Ltd.; the rollout of a new NFC tap-to-pay section called “E-wallets” featuring SoftBank’s “PayPay Money,” KDDI’s “au PAY,” and NTT DOCOMO’s “d-Payment”; the addition of new bank account linking features for “E-wallet” top-ups and peer-to-peer transfers, including “MUFG Bank,” “Mizuho Bank,” “Japan Post Bank,” and “Rakuten Bank”; and even integration with cryptocurrency wallets like “Rakuten Wallet.”
Regarding Google Wallet, we are reporting another new development observed on Saturday, October 18, 2025. In the HTML code of the “Check supported payment methods (Japan)” page on the official Google Wallet Help site, the “Prepaid cards” section, which is currently displayed under “Credit, debit, and prepaid cards,” is becoming internally independent. Furthermore, three new services have been added to this standalone “Prepaid cards” section: “Visa Prepaid,” “au PAY Prepaid Card,” and “d CARD PREPAID.”

The reason for the “Prepaid cards” section becoming independent from the “Credit, debit, and prepaid cards” section is unclear. However, the addition of “Visa Prepaid,” “au PAY Prepaid Card,” and “d CARD PREPAID”—all of which are currently unsupported by Google Wallet—to the Google Wallet Help page indicates that these three prepaid card services will be supported in the future for online payments and NFC (Type-A/B) or FeliCa payments. Incidentally, this is not the first appearance for the “au PAY Prepaid Card,” as it was also mentioned in the “E-wallets” section.
That said, when exactly will Google Wallet be renewed?
