On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, Google expanded “Preferred Sources” worldwide, as announced “coming soon” a week prior on Wednesday, December 10. The feature had initially launched in the US and India on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
“Preferred Sources” is a feature similar to following sources in Google News. It prioritizes news articles and content from websites (media outlets) you’ve registered as favorites, making them appear more prominently in the “Top Stories” section of Google Search results. In other words, articles from media outlets you trust are more likely to be prioritized in the “Top Stories” section.
To add a media outlet as a “Preferred Source,” users can click the “Preferred Sources” icon to the right of the “Top Stories” section that appears during a news-related search, and then enter the URL of their favorite outlet. Additionally, media outlets can encourage readers to add them as a “Preferred Source” using a link formatted as “https://google.com/preferences/source?q=(site URL)”. There is no limit to the number of media outlets that can be registered as “Preferred Sources.”
And now, “Preferred Sources” has been expanded worldwide. However, at this time, the rollout is for English-language environments.
“Preferred Sources” is scheduled to expand its language support in early 2026. Incidentally, media outlets registered as “Preferred Sources” reportedly see an average twofold increase in clicks. The rollout for Japan and the Japanese language is eagerly awaited.
