  • Google announces further expansion of news content display for “Preferred Sources”.
  • Now also featured in “AI Overviews” and “AI Mode”.
  • News content published by web media registered by users as “Preferred Sources” will now be more easily displayed not only in “Top Stories” but also in AI searches like “AI Overviews” and “AI Mode”.

On Thursday, August 20, 2026 local time, Google announced a further expansion of news content display for “Preferred Sources.” This feature originally launched in the US and India on Tuesday, August 12, 2025—exactly one year prior—followed by a global rollout for English environments on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, and an expansion to all supported languages including Japanese on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

Google’s “Preferred Sources” is a web media registration feature similar to following publishers on “Google News.” When a web media outlet registered by a user as a “Preferred Source” publishes new news content, it is given priority display within the “Top Stories” section of Google Search results.

Now, the display of news content from these “Preferred Sources” registered media outlets has been expanded to appear in “AI Overviews” and “AI Mode” as well. This means that news content published by web media registered as a “Preferred Source” by users will now be more easily displayed not only in “Top Stories,” but also in AI searches such as “AI Overviews” and “AI Mode.” Please note that there is no limit to the number of media outlets you can register as “Preferred Sources.”

With that said, we will continue to deliver useful information to you all, and we would greatly appreciate it if you could register our site as a “Preferred Source.”
