Google Photos Rolls Out New Video Editing Tools

On Tuesday, December 9, 2025, Google announced several new video editing-related tools for its online photo library service, Google Photos.

The new features announced are “Highlight Video” templates, a redesigned video editor, and the promotion of the app to the default video editor on Android. These new video editing tools for Google Photos have already begun rolling out.

“Highlight Video” Templates (Android)

As a new feature for the Android version of the Google Photos app, “Highlight Video” templates are being rolled out. These templates allow users to easily create optimal “Highlight Videos” where text and cuts are synchronized with background music.

Simply choose a template and select the photos and videos to include, and Google Photos will automatically generate the perfect “Highlight Video.” The variety of templates is also planned to be expanded continuously.

Redesigned Video Editor (Android / iOS)

The video editor in the Android and iOS versions of the Google Photos app is being redesigned to be faster and easier to use, featuring multi-clip editing, a universal timeline to support storytelling, and an adaptive canvas to simplify editing.

Furthermore, the redesigned video editor will also feature a BGM library tool [+♪ (Music)] to help you find the perfect soundtrack.

Promoted to Android’s Default Video Editing App

As a new tool for the redesigned video editor in the Android Google Photos app, a new text insertion tool [Text] will be rolled out. This tool allows you to insert customized text by specifying fonts, colors, and backgrounds.

Additionally, the Android Google Photos app has been promoted to the default video editing app on Android devices. This means that when you edit a video on your Android device, the Google Photos app will launch, allowing you to quickly perform video edits.
