Finally: Google Photos “Ask Photos” Rollout in Japan

Originally unveiled at Google I/O 2024 and initially rolled out to English users in the US in September 2024, the feature was set to reach over 100 countries, including Japan, and support 17 new languages, including Japanese.

However, “Ask Photos” did not end up launching in Japan by the end of 2025.

In the midst of this wait, it appears that “Ask Photos” has finally begun rolling out in Japan as of mid-February 2026. Once “Ask Photos” is deployed, the “🔍 (Search)” tab in the Android and iOS versions of the Google Photos app changes to “🔍 (Ask).”

“Ask Photos” is a search feature integrated with AI. It allows for conversational interactions, such as asking, “Where did we go camping before?” or “What dish did I order on my last trip?” Google Photos (Ask Photos) understands context, such as the setting and background within your gallery, extracting relevant details to suggest specific “Memories” and helping you vividly recall moments from your life.

Additionally, with the rollout of “Ask Photos,” a new section called “Gemini features in Google Photos” has been added to the “User Settings” of the Android and iOS apps. In this menu, users can toggle the “Gemini” functionality itself on or off, as well as manage individual Gemini-powered features like “Ask Photos.”
