- The integration of “Location Sharing” as a Messaging Extension for the “Google Messages” app for Android appears to have started rolling out between late February and early March 2026.
- It has been confirmed that “Real-time location information (Location Sharing)” is now available.
- “Real-time location information” is a feature equivalent to the “Location Sharing” available in apps such as “Google Maps,” “Find Hub,” “Google Family Link,” and “Personal Safety.”
The integration of “Location Sharing” as a Messaging Extension, which was discovered through an app teardown of the Android “Google Messages” app update (version messages.android_20260217_00_RC00) released in late February 2026, appears to have begun its rollout between late February and early March 2026.
While the “Google Messages” app for Android is currently being updated to version messages.android_20260224_00_RC00, I have confirmed that “Real-time location information (Location Sharing)” has become available on some Android devices, including my own “Pixel 10.”
The “Real-time location information” now rolling out to the “Google Messages” app for Android is equivalent to the “Location Sharing” feature available through “Google Maps,” “Find Hub,” “Google Family Link,” and “Personal Safety” apps. Previously, users had to start “Location Sharing” from the “Google Maps” app, select “Google Messages” as the sharing method, and then specify the recipient. Now, however, “Real-time location information” can be shared directly from within the “Google Messages” app.
“Location Sharing” and “Real-time location information” allow users to share their own live location with friends or family for a set period (1 hour / until the end of the day / a custom duration). In addition to ensuring smooth meetups, it is also a useful feature for monitoring movements with mutual consent.
