A new customization feature called “Chat Themes” has begun rolling out for the Google Messages SMS/MMS/RCS client app for Android.
The new “Chat Themes” feature in Google Messages is an upgrade to the “Change Colors” feature that launched in May 2026. While “Change Colors” was limited to simply adjusting the chat screen’s color scheme, “Chat Themes” allows you to choose from nine different theme categories (background images) or even select your own photo to set as the background.
Note that while the previous “Change Colors” feature applied the selected theme to all participants in a chat, the new “Chat Themes” feature only applies to the user who sets it. It does not apply to all members of the chat.
Additionally, the new “Chat Themes” feature for Google Messages is currently rolling out to select Android devices for those registered as beta testers. It has not yet been widely released.
