- Google Japan has officially announced three new Google Maps features designed to help with outings.
- The three features are “Know before you go,” a refreshed “Explore” tab, and “Anonymous reviews.”
- Google had previously announced these for international markets in late 2025.
On Monday, February 16, 2026, Google Japan officially announced three new features for the “Google Maps” service to assist users with their outings.
The three announced features are “Know before you go,” a refreshed “Explore” tab, and “Anonymous reviews.” While Google headquarters had officially announced these for international markets in late 2025, their official rollout in Japan has now been confirmed.
“Know before you go”

Deploying as a new feature for the Android and iOS versions of the “Google Maps” app, “Know before you go” is a convenient tool that uses “Gemini” to summarize reviews and useful information from the web when searching for destinations like restaurants, hotels, or event venues. It proactively displays this summarized data as “insights.”
Because it displays critical insights such as the best booking methods, hidden menu items, and parking tips, users can complete their preparations before even heading out to the location.

Refreshed “Explore” Tab

With the refresh of the “Explore” tab in the Google Maps app for Android and iOS, the app will now display helpful local information based on the user’s current location. This includes recommended spots like popular restaurants, activities, and tourist attractions sourced from tour and restaurant booking sites.

“Anonymous reviews”

The new “Anonymous reviews” feature for Google Maps allows users to set a specific nickname and profile picture for reviews. This feature will be available for the web version of Google Maps as well as the Android and iOS apps.
While “Anonymous reviews” is a useful feature for those who do not wish to post under their real names, the reviews are still linked to the user’s Google account. Therefore, if any misconduct occurs—such as posting suspicious or fake reviews—disciplinary action will be taken against the original Google account.
