- Development of the “Unpaved” and “Narrow road” warning/highlighting features for Google Maps navigation continues to progress.
- Analysis of the Android “Google Maps” app v26.22.01.920688788 update has revealed additional resource code related to “Driving Decorations,” which provide graphic warnings or highlights for narrow and unpaved roads.
- The resource code has been expanded to include features that inform users of the number of unpaved road sections along their planned route.
Recently, in our original “App Teardown” content, we reported on a new feature currently under development for Google Maps: warning and highlighting features for “unpaved” and “narrow” roads during car navigation.
It has only been a few days since that report, but we have already confirmed further progress in development and would like to provide an update.

Based on an analysis of the Android “Google Maps” app update v26.22.01.920688788, released on Thursday, May 28, 2026, we confirmed that additional resource code has been added regarding the “Driving Decorations” for “narrow roads” and “unpaved roads” in car navigation. While our previous findings only showed single lines of resource code for “Narrow road” and “Unpaved,” the code has now been expanded to include logic that notifies the user of the number of unpaved road segments along their route.

This allows users to know in advance whether there is only one unpaved section or multiple, and it will likely eventually offer alternative route suggestions to avoid these roads.
That said, these “narrow road” and “unpaved road” highlighting and notification features for Google Maps navigation are still in the internal development phase and have not been rolled out as a public feature. However, given the rapid progress we have seen in such a short period, there is a high possibility that these features will be officially launched in the not-too-distant future.
In any case, this will surely be a highly anticipated feature for users who are uncomfortable driving in difficult conditions or who simply wish to avoid narrow roads.
