- Google announces support for changing Google Account usernames.
- Users can now change the “ooo” part of their “ooo@gmail.com” Gmail address.
- Even after the change, the old username is retained as an alias, allowing users to send/receive with the new address while continuing to receive mail at the old address.
On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, Google announced that it is now supporting changes to Google Account usernames.
The Google Account username refers to the “ooo” portion of an “ooo@gmail.com” Gmail address. Previously, this “ooo” part could not be changed, meaning users had to create an entirely new Google Account if they wanted a different email address.
However, with this new ability to modify the “ooo” portion, users can now obtain a new email address while keeping their current Google Account. This is a highly anticipated improvement that users have long awaited.
Furthermore, even if the “ooo” part is changed, the old username is kept as an alias owned by the user. This ensures that while you send and receive emails using your new address, you can still continue to receive mail sent to your old address.

Changes to your Gmail username can be made via the “Personal Info” section of your “Google Account.” Please note that this announcement regarding Gmail username (email address) changes is currently being rolled out specifically for users in the United States.
While a gradual expansion is expected, this feature is not yet available in Japan.
