On Tuesday, June 9, 2026 (local time), Google announced six new features for its MVNO service, “Google Fi Wireless,” which operates in the US and the UK, just in time for the summer travel season.

The six new features being introduced to Google Fi Wireless include real-time automatic switching between international networks, expanded 5G coverage, extended VPN availability, a broader rollout of “Wi-Fi Auto-Connect+,” a more seamless setup process, and promotional discounts for new subscribers. Please note that Google Fi Wireless is still not available in Japan.

Real-time automatic switching between international networks

Real-time automatic switching between international networks

To ensure a consistent connection while traveling abroad, a new feature has been introduced that automatically switches between multiple international networks in real-time.

This real-time automatic switching feature is available for Google Pixel devices from the Pixel 7 and later.

Expanded 5G coverage

Expanded 5G coverage

5G connectivity for international roaming has been significantly expanded.

However, 5G service is not available in all regions, and actual speed and performance depend on device configuration, capabilities, local network traffic, signal strength, and physical obstructions. For international high-speed data, the “Unlimited Premium” plan offers up to 50GB per person, and the “Flexible” plan offers up to 15GB. Once these data limits are exceeded, speeds will be throttled to a maximum of 256kbps.

It is important to note that Google Fi Wireless is not intended for international use (outside of the country of origin) for more than 90 consecutive days. In regions where Google Fi Wireless is not officially provided, users must connect within their home country at least once every 90 days to maintain service; otherwise, service will be suspended from the 91st day onward.

Extended VPN availability

The coverage of the “VPN” security feature, designed for safer use of public Wi-Fi and other networks, has been further extended.

The VPN is available in select countries for devices running iOS 16.4 or later and Android 13 or later. Please be aware that even with a Google-provided VPN, some data may not be routed through the service, and depending on your chosen plan, data usage may increase.

Additionally, various restrictions apply, so it is recommended to check the terms before use.

Expanded rollout of “Wi-Fi Auto-Connect+”

Expanded rollout of “Wi-Fi Auto-Connect+”

The rollout of “Wi-Fi Auto-Connect+” has been expanded. This feature automatically connects users to a high-speed virtual carrier network (VCN) that offers double the reliability and 30% less latency compared to standard Google Fi Wireless networks.

When using this auto-connect feature, all communications are automatically encrypted. It is available in select regions across North America, Europe, and Asia for Google Pixel devices from the Pixel 5a and later.

Seamless setup

To make travel preparations easier, the setup and activation process for the line has been streamlined and simplified.

This setup is available for devices running Android 9 or later; however, to use Google Fi Wireless outside the US, the service must first be activated within the United States. Furthermore, if multiple Google accounts are registered on the device, the Google Fi Wireless account must be the device administrator or owner.

Promotional discounts for new subscribers

In preparation for the summer travel season, promotional discounts are being offered for new subscribers to start with Google Fi Wireless at a great value.

When adding data-only SIM cards, users can connect up to four devices and share their monthly high-speed data allotment. However, the data usage of these connected devices is subject to the same international communication restrictions as regular mobile phones and will count toward the monthly high-speed data usage limit.
