Google has announced a major expansion of supported languages for the automatic video captioning feature in its online storage service, Google Drive, which began rolling out on Thursday, July 25, 2024.

The automatic video captioning feature for Google Drive automatically generates captions for videos saved in the service. This feature is available to both Google Workspace accounts and general Google users, but it initially only supported English captions for English videos.

However, the range of supported languages for Google Drive’s automatic video captioning has now been significantly expanded. A total of 27 new languages are now supported: Arabic, Czech, Dutch, Filipino, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.

If the audio of a video saved in Google Drive is in one of the 28 supported languages, including English and Japanese, captions will be automatically detected and generated. However, for general Google users, the automatic captioning feature needs to be turned on for each video.

Chinese is also scheduled to be added as a supported language for Google Drive’s automatic video captioning feature in the future.
