On Thursday, January 8, 2026, Google announced three major new features for its email service, Gmail, based on its Google AI, “Gemini 3.”

The newly announced Gemini 3-based features for Gmail include the introduction of “AI Overviews,” the free release of “Help Me Write,” and the test rollout of the new “AI Inbox.” Each will initially be rolled out for US English, but expansion to more regions and languages is planned within the next few months.

Introduction of “AI Overviews”

“AI Overviews” Conversational Search

“AI Overviews,” powered by Google AI “Gemini 3,” are coming to the Gmail email service.

Similar to “AI Overviews” in Google Search, when you search for emails, AI Overviews in Gmail will provide a concise summary and key points of the search results tailored to the relevant email threads. Additionally, Gmail’s AI Overviews will support conversational searches—such as “Who was the plumber who gave me the bathroom renovation estimate last year?”—and will return the appropriate email threads along with a summary of the contents.

“Help Me Write” Now Free for Everyone

“Help Me Write” (Writing Assistance)

In Gmail, the “Help Me Write” AI feature—which was previously available primarily to Google Workspace accounts—is being released for free to all users.

“Help Me Write” in Gmail is an AI tool that not only proofreads your drafted emails but can also create an entire email draft from scratch based on a simple prompt. Furthermore, the existing “Smart Reply” is being upgraded to “Suggested Reply,” a Gemini 3-based feature that offers AI-generated reply suggestions based on the context of the email. Both features will be available for free to general Gmail users.

Additionally, in February 2026, Google plans to roll out a feature that allows “Help Me Write” to be even more personalized by pulling context from other Google apps. For members of Google One’s AI subscription plans—”Google AI Pro” and “Google AI Ultra”—a new advanced proofreading feature called “Proofread” will also be introduced to refine grammar, tone, and style.

Test Rollout of the New “AI Inbox”

“AI Inbox”

Google has announced “AI Inbox,” a new feature for Gmail powered by Google AI “Gemini 3.”

The “AI Inbox” feature uses AI to summarize and organize the contents of your inbox, such as highlighting pending tasks. It infers relationships based on your interactions with frequent senders or contacts, identifies important individuals, and prioritizes them while displaying summaries and key points directly within the AI Inbox.

The “AI Inbox” for Gmail will begin a test rollout to trusted testers, with a general public release expected in the coming months.
