Key Points of This Article
  • Google has announced the introduction of “AI Overviews” to Gmail.
  • Similar to AI Overviews in Google Search, when you search for emails, it will provide a concise summary and key points of the search results tailored to the relevant email threads.

On Thursday, January 8, 2026, Google announced the introduction of “AI Overviews” to its email service, Gmail, powered by the Google AI “Gemini 3.”

The “AI Overviews” feature in Gmail functions similarly to the one in Google Search. When searching for emails, it provides a concise summary and key points of the search results relevant to the email threads. These AI Overviews in Gmail are being released for free to all Gmail users starting today, January 8, 2026.

Furthermore, AI Overviews in Gmail will support conversational queries, such as “Who was the plumber who gave me the quote for the bathroom renovation last year?” and will return the relevant email threads along with a summary. This specific functionality will be rolled out to members of Google One’s AI subscription plans, “Google AI Pro” and “Google AI Ultra.”

Conversational Search in AI Overviews

However, the initial rollout of AI Overviews in Gmail and the conversational search functionality is limited to US English. Expansion to more regions and languages is planned over the coming months.
