Long-Awaited Update: Gemini Introduces “Branch in New Chat”

Key Points of This Article
  • Google rolls out “Branch in new chat” as a new feature for the Gemini app.
  • This feature allows users to branch off from a specific point in a chat with Gemini.
  • By branching mid-conversation, you can explore different paths, such as Pattern A, Pattern B, or Pattern C.

On Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Google began rolling out a new feature for the Google AI “Gemini” app called “Branch in new chat”

The “Branch in new chat” feature in the Gemini app allows you to branch off your conversation with Gemini at any point. By selecting “Branch in new chat” during a chat, a copy of the conversation is created as a new branch, allowing you to continue the original chat and the newly branched chat separately.

In essence, this allows you to create different variations—Pattern A, Pattern B, or Pattern C—by branching off mid-conversation. Moreover, you can scroll back through your Gemini chat history and choose to branch off from a previous point in the conversation.

For many users, “Branch in new chat” is likely a long-awaited feature.

The new “Branch in new chat” feature for the Gemini app is currently being rolled out in stages. It appears to be available to only about 20% of users worldwide at this time.

Personally, I have confirmed that “Branch in new chat” is available on the web version of the Gemini app.
