On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Google announced a major update to “Gemini in Chrome,” its AI-integrated browser service for Windows, macOS, and Chromebook Plus.

This major update to “Gemini in Chrome” introduces “Gemini 3,” Google’s most intelligent AI model. Additionally, “Auto browse,” an autonomous agent feature, is being rolled out as a preview for “Google AI Pro” and “Google AI Ultra” members of Google One’s AI plans in the United States. “Auto browse” is an evolution of “Google Autofill”—which automatically enters IDs, passwords, addresses, and credit card information—designed to autonomously execute complex web tasks that involve multiple steps.

With “Auto browse,” for example, the AI can fill out “Google Forms” surveys on behalf of the user by pulling data from files like PDFs, tasks that previously required manual input.

Furthermore, for multi-day travel planning, it can research hotel and flight prices, find travel periods that fit the user’s budget, and present the findings directly.

It also supports narrowing down rental properties based on user criteria, making the apartment hunting process much easier.

Beyond these examples, “Auto browse” can be used for scheduling appointments, gathering tax documents, obtaining quotes from plumbers or electricians, confirming bill payments, submitting expense reports, and managing subscriptions. Additionally, the multimodal text and image recognition capabilities powered by “Gemini 3” have been enhanced. The AI can identify items in images uploaded by the user, find e-commerce sites selling those products, add them to the cart, and even automatically enter available discount codes, providing end-to-end shopping assistance.

Moreover, signing into websites using “Google Autofill” will only be executed when the user grants permission.

Shopping assistance

“Auto browse” in “Gemini in Chrome” also supports the “Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP),” an agent-based protocol that functions across the entire e-commerce experience—from product search to purchase and post-purchase support. This provides a new AI-driven shopping experience on platforms such as Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, and Target.
