On Monday, November 2, 2026 local time, Google announced that it will introduce a horizontally scrolling tab strip to the desktop version of the “Chrome” browser.

The horizontally scrolling tab strip coming to the desktop version of “Chrome” is a new feature that prevents tabs from disappearing off-screen when a large number of tabs are open, enabling smooth switching and viewing through scrolling. Scrolling can be performed using trackpad gestures or a mouse wheel, as well as via clustered scroll arrow buttons located at the end of the tab strip.

Additionally, if these scroll buttons are not needed, they can be easily turned on or off within the “Appearance” settings, or toggled directly by right-clicking the buttons. Furthermore, pinned tabs are assigned a dedicated fixed area and can expand up to 50% of the available horizontal width.

The horizontally scrolling tab strip for desktop “Chrome” announced today is first being released early for the developer version, “Chrome Canary.” Users can try out the horizontally scrolling tab strip right away in “Chrome Canary” by enabling the Chrome flag: `#tab-strip-unification`.

Following user feedback, the horizontally scrolling tab strip is scheduled to be rolled out as an official feature for the stable desktop version of “Chrome.”
