On Monday, May 11, 2026, Google announced the rollout of “End-to-End Encryption (E2EE)” as a security feature for RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging between Android and iPhone.

While RCS messaging between the Android “Google Messages” app and the iPhone “Messages” app has already been available—with carriers like au (au / UQ mobile / povo) in Japan initiating support around mid-October 2025—there remained unresolved security concerns regarding cross-OS RCS communication.

To address these challenges, the introduction of E2EE for RCS messages between the two platforms has now been announced. By supporting encrypted RCS messages, only the sender and the recipient can view the content, eliminating the risk of messages being intercepted during transmission.

Please note that this is currently being introduced as a beta version. The system requirements for E2EE RCS messaging include having the latest version of the “Google Messages” app on the Android side, and iOS 18.2 or later, the “Messages” app, and a supported carrier on the iPhone side.

In Japan, both au and SoftBank now support end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) RCS messaging.
