- The “Backup only favorites” toggle has finally begun rolling out to the Android version of the “Google Photos” app.
- The new “Backup only favorites” setting was confirmed in version v7.54 of the Android Google Photos app.
- When enabled, only photos and videos marked with “★ (Favorite)” will be automatically backed up to Google cloud storage.
Around late August 2025, references to a “Backup only favorites” setting were discovered within the code of version v7.39 of the “Google Photos” app for Android. This suggested that a new feature to automatically back up only the photos and videos marked as favorites (★) to Google cloud storage might be on the horizon.
It now appears that the “Backup only favorites” ON/OFF setting has finally started rolling out to the Android version of the Google Photos app. The new setting has been confirmed in version v7.54 of the Android app. However, it seems to be a gradual rollout.

When the “Backup only favorites” setting is turned ON in the Android Google Photos app, literally only the photos and videos added to “Favorites (★)” will be automatically backed up to Google cloud storage. This will allow users to save on Google cloud storage space.
However, if you manage Google Photos across multiple devices, enabling “Backup only favorites” is not necessarily recommended, as it adds the extra step of having to manually favorite photos and videos just to back them up. Please keep this in mind.
Additionally, the “Backup only favorites” setting has not yet been confirmed for the iOS version of the Google Photos app.
