On Friday, December 12, 2025, Google announced a new “Live Translate” feature for the Android version of its Google Translate app, based on Google AI “Gemini (Gemini 2.5 Flash Native Audio),” which will be rolled out as a beta.

The new Gemini-based “Live Translate” feature, announced for beta rollout on the Google Translate app for Android, is a translation function that translates what the other person is saying and plays it back through headphones connected to your Android device, all while preserving the original tone, emphasis, and intonation. This is made possible by the introduction of the Gemini-based voice generation AI model, “Gemini 2.5 Flash Native Audio.”

This new “Live Translate” feature for the Google Translate app on Android will be rolled out in the US, Mexico, and India. It will support over 70 languages and work with any headphones.

Furthermore, an expansion to more countries is planned for 2026, with a rollout to the iOS version of the Google Translate app also scheduled.
