The “Live Translate” feature for the Android “Google Translate” app, powered by Google AI “Gemini (Gemini 2.5 Flash Native Audio),” which Google first began rolling out as a beta in the US, Mexico, and India on Friday, December 12, 2025, has finally launched in Japan around Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
The Gemini-powered “Live Translate (Beta)” for the Android “Google Translate” app translates what your conversation partner is saying while maintaining their tone, emphasis, and intonation, delivering the audio through headphones or speakers connected to your Android device. You can choose to play the translated audio through the device’s built-in speaker, an external speaker, or headphones.
This Gemini-powered “Live Translate (Beta)” is made possible by the integration of the audio-generative AI model, “Gemini 2.5 Flash Native Audio.”

While the Gemini-powered “Live Translate (Beta)” is currently available for the Android version of the “Google Translate” app, it is scheduled to expand to the iOS version of the “Google Translate” app later in 2026.
