Android to Auto-Disconnect Bank Impersonation Scam Calls

Key Points of This Article
  • Google has officially announced a new user/device protection feature for Android that automatically disconnects calls from bank impersonation scammers.
  • The feature protects users by automatically hanging up when scammers use “spoofing”—a technique involving internet telephony systems to mask caller IDs—to make it appear as though a call is coming from a trusted financial institution.
  • If you have the app of a partner bank or financial institution installed and are logged in, the automatic call disconnection feature will verify incoming calls in the background.

On Tuesday, May 12, 2026 (local time), Google officially announced a new user/device protection feature for Android: automatic disconnection for bank impersonation scam calls.

This feature, being introduced to Android, protects users by automatically ending calls when scammers use techniques like “spoofing”—where internet telephony is used to mask caller IDs—to make it appear as if they are calling from a trusted bank or financial institution. By offering “Verified Financial Calls” in collaboration with Google, participating banks and financial institutions can ensure that if a scammer impersonates them without the official verification, the system will detect a “Verified Financial Call” mismatch, disconnect the call, and notify the user of the reason.

Specifically, if you have the partner bank or financial institution’s app installed and are logged in, the automatic scam call disconnection feature will verify incoming calls in the background. If a call claiming to be from a bank or financial institution occurs, the verification runs in the background, and if a “Verified Financial Call” mismatch is detected, the system will automatically terminate the call.

Automatic Bank Impersonation Scam Call Disconnection Feature

Furthermore, while some banks and financial institutions may have designated “inbound-only” phone numbers, scammers sometimes exploit this by spoofing those official numbers to make their calls appear legitimate. The automatic bank impersonation scam call disconnection feature can detect this as well, identifying it as a “Verified Financial Call” mismatch and automatically ending the call.

This feature will be rolled out to Android devices running Android 11 or higher over the coming weeks. Partner banks and financial institutions initially include Revolut, Itaú, and Nubank, with more institutions expected to join within 2026.
