On Friday, February 13, 2026, Google released “Android 17 Beta 1,” the first beta version of the next-generation Android OS, for the “Android Canary” channel.

Google has traditionally released initial beta OS versions through “Developer Preview.” However, starting with “Android 17,” this process has been replaced by releases via the “Android Canary” channel.

According to Google executive and President of Android Ecosystem Sameer Samat (@ssamat), the transition to the “Android Canary” channel is a strategy to release updates more rapidly and consistently.

The “Android Canary” channel is fundamentally designed to provide the latest preview builds continuously throughout the year. Although the initial installation requires manually flashing a factory image using the “Android Flash Tool,” subsequent software updates are delivered via “OTA (Over the Air).”
