On Tuesday, May 12, 2026 (local time), Google announced three new user and device protection features, primarily for the upcoming “Android 17” OS: an evolved “Live Threat Detection,” protection for APK file downloads in the Chrome app, and expansions to “Advanced Protection.”
These three Android protection features announced for Android 17 are scheduled to roll out sequentially through late 2026, focusing on real-time threat analysis powered by on-device AI and stricter system-level limitations. Note that some components, such as the expanded “Advanced Protection” features, are already being deployed in Android 16.
Evolved “Live Threat Detection”
“Live Threat Detection” uses on-device AI to analyze the behavior of your Android device in real-time, protecting it from potential threats to the user or the device itself.
This feature is evolving to detect malicious activities, such as apps covertly forwarding SMS messages or abusing accessibility permissions to create invisible overlays on the screen. Additionally, Android 17 introduces new technology to monitor app interactions, enabling the system to identify known suspicious patterns in real-time—such as apps that hide their icons and launch in the background—while also dynamically responding to unknown threats.
Chrome APK Download Protection
For the Android version of the Chrome app, when “Safe Browsing” is enabled, AI will now verify APK files downloaded from websites or other sources for known malware immediately before the download completes.
If any danger is identified, the download will be blocked to ensure the security of your device.
Expansion of “Advanced Protection”
The “Advanced Protection” feature, introduced in Android 16, is being expanded and refined with more robust specifications.
First, “USB Protection,” which guards against threats from external devices, is now compatible with all Google Pixel devices running Android 16. Furthermore, “Intrusion Logging,” which enables investigation of a device if a breach is suspected, has been rolling out progressively since the December 2025 monthly update.
In Android 17, access to accessibility services will be restricted exclusively to apps certified as legitimate assistive tools. Additionally, new security measures include disabling the ability to unlock Android devices using Wear OS smartwatches and restricting “WebGPU” support in Chrome.
