On Wednesday, May 27, 2026 (local time), Google announced the expansion of its “Preferred Sources” feature, which launched in Japan in late April 2026, to its AI search services, “AI Mode” and “AI Overviews.”
“Preferred Sources” is a registration feature for news-related web media, similar to following outlets on “Google News.” When a web media outlet that a user has registered as a “Preferred Source” publishes news articles or content, that content is given priority in the “Top Stories” section of Google Search results.
This “Preferred Sources” feature is now being expanded to “AI Mode” and “AI Overviews.” When a registered “Preferred Source” is cited as an information source within these AI features, it will be clearly labeled and prominently highlighted.
