On Tuesday, September 15, 2026 (local time), Google announced the monthly software update for September 2026, which includes security vulnerability fixes and feature enhancements, for a total of 21 Google Pixel models running the new-generation Android OS “Android 17”: the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 9a, Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and Pixel 10a. Along with releasing the September 2026 monthly software update, the company also announced the September 2026 edition of the “Pixel Drop” feature rollout.
The September 2026 Pixel Drop introduces multiple new features, such as the “Pixel VIPs” update and “Scam Detection” integrated directly into “Gboard.” The “Harry Potter Audiobook Packs” theme pack, whose existence was confirmed in April 2026, is finally set to roll out with the September 2026 Pixel Drop.
“Pixel VIPs” Update
The “Pixel VIPs” feature, designed to ensure you never miss communications from your most important contacts, is getting an update.
The newly redesigned “Pixel VIPs” widget has been expanded with quick actions that let you call or message designated VIPs with a single tap. Additionally, new glanceable notification badges have been introduced to help you avoid missing urgent or unread messages, and a floating menu at the bottom of the screen allows you to easily switch between multiple VIPs.
New “Harry Potter Audiobook Packs” Theme Pack
To celebrate the release of “Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions” on the audiobook service “Audible,” Google Pixel devices are getting a new theme pack called “Harry Potter Audiobook Packs.”
The “Harry Potter Audiobook Packs” bundle together custom wallpapers, icons, notification sounds, and other elements inspired by the wizarding world of Harry Potter. Eligible Google Pixel device users will also receive a 2-month free trial of “Audible.”
Note that the “Harry Potter Audiobook Packs” will be available until Thursday, December 31, 2026, while the “Audible” free trial will be offered in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, India, Australia, and Japan until Thursday, January 14, 2027.
Gboard “Scam Detection” Integration
“Scam Detection,” a feature that preemptively detects fraudulent messages, is now integrated into the “Gboard” keyboard app.
As a result, when you start typing a reply in various messaging apps, a warning chip reading something like “Potential scam” will appear at the top of the keyboard. Because all processing happens in real-time entirely on your device, your conversation contents are never sent externally.
The integration of “Scam Detection” into the “Gboard” app will roll out for Google Pixel devices starting with the Pixel 6 in the United States.
Expanded Rollout of “Message Scam Detection”
The “Message Scam Detection” feature, which is already available on the Pixel 6 and newer in the US, is expanding to 9 new countries—Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Singapore, the UK, and Japan—and 6 new languages: Arabic, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, and Japanese.
With this expanded rollout, “Message Scam Detection” will now function outside of just the “Google Messages” app as well.
Expanded Device Support for “Pause Point”
Support for “Pause Point“—a feature introduced for the “Pixel 11” series to help reduce unwanted app usage—is expanding to more devices much sooner than expected.
“Pause Point” is part of Android’s digital wellbeing program, “Digital Wellbeing,” designed to prevent excessive smartphone use and encourage more intentional app habits. Many users face the issue of unconsciously opening apps and finding themselves mindlessly scrolling for long periods, wasting time. To solve this problem, “Digital Wellbeing” features like “App Timers” and “Usage Reminders” have been built in from the start.
Now, this “Pause Point” feature is rapidly expanding to Google Pixel devices starting from the Pixel 6.
Google Pixel Watch 4 / 5: “Raise to Talk,” “Double Pinch,” and “Wrist Twist”
For “Google Pixel Watch 4” and “Google Pixel Watch 5” users, a variety of updates and bug fixes have been implemented, including improvements to the “Raise to Talk” feature (which lets you speak simply by lifting your wrist) and an expansion of apps supporting hand gestures (double pinch / wrist twist).
