The custom AI expert feature “Gem (Gems)” in Google’s AI “Gemini” has been downgraded in a sense due to the Gemini renewal.
It now appears that “Gem” will be discontinued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. This discontinuation came to light as some users began seeing a notification about the end of “Gem” on their “Gem” home page.
With the discontinuation of “Gem,” users are recommended to save their “custom instructions” or recreate them as “skills” using Skills, the task execution tool for the personal AI agent “Gemini Spark.”
Gems are retiring October 20
Save your Gem content or recreate them as skills to keep your workflows running.
Gemini’s custom AI expert feature “Gem” was originally announced at “Google I/O 2024” in May 2024, and began rolling out on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, for Gemini Advanced (at the time) members. Later, in March 2025, it was made available for free to free-tier users as well.
Although “Gem” is currently widely available, as mentioned earlier, it was downgraded in a sense by the Gemini UI renewal in May 2026.
Since I heavily rely on “Gem” for my daily blogging activities, its discontinuation comes as quite a shock. I will need to consider migrating to an alternative.
