Google has sent out a direct message (DM) titled “Discontinuation of Google Assistant on Mobile Devices” to Google users, announcing the end of the smart assistant service “Google Assistant” and the schedule for transitioning to Google AI “Gemini.”
Starting Friday, September 4, 2026, the removal of access rights for “Google Assistant” will begin and roll out over several weeks.
Once access rights are removed, switching back to “Google Assistant” will no longer be possible, unifying the experience under “Gemini.”

The removal of access rights for “Google Assistant” will begin on Friday, September 4, 2026, and will roll out over the course of several weeks. For example, while Android currently allows users to switch between “Google Assistant” and “Gemini,” once the access rights for “Google Assistant” are removed, switching to it will no longer be possible, consolidating everything into “Gemini.”
This removal of “Google Assistant” access and unification with “Gemini” will apply not only to Android, but also to Wear OS and headphones that support “Gemini.” However, “Google built-in” vehicles and some other systems will continue to offer “Google Assistant.”
