A new backup feature called “Nightly Backup” has been suddenly rolled out for the online photo library service, Google Photos.
“Nightly Backup” in Google Photos is a manual backup feature that allows users to back up items like photos taken throughout the day to the Google Photos cloud, for instance, before going to bed. If you start a “Nightly Backup” while your device is charging, the backup process will run at a slower, more deliberate pace.
We have confirmed that “Nightly Backup” is available in the iOS version of the Google Photos app, version 7.79 and later. Availability on the Android version of the Google Photos app has not yet been confirmed.

However, unlike power consumption, the amount of data usage remains the same regardless of whether you back up at night. To be honest, the practical utility of “Nightly Backup” is unclear.
Previously, we saw the “Back up only favorites” feature rolled out to the Android version of Google Photos, only for it to suddenly disappear, so it is possible that “Nightly Backup” might also be removed eventually.
