On Tuesday, May 19, 2026 (local time), Google announced the “Gemini 3.5 Flash” upgrade for its AI search service, “AI Mode,” during the “Google I/O 2026” developer event.

Previously, the underlying AI model for “AI Mode” was “Gemini 3.1 Flash.” With the announcement of the latest “Gemini 3.5” model family, the base AI model has now been upgraded to “Gemini 3.5 Flash.”

In addition, the Google Search bar, which has remained a staple for over 25 years, is undergoing a major upgrade. This revamped search bar has been transformed into an intelligent “AI Mode” tool that supports various input formats, including not just text, but also images, files, videos, and Chrome tabs.

Furthermore, an extension beyond standard autocomplete has been implemented, allowing AI to anticipate user intent and assist with follow-up questions. These features will be rolled out gradually across all countries and languages where “AI Mode” is available.
