Key Points of This Article
  • Google announced the expansion of its digital watermarking technology, “SynthID,” including new verification capabilities and broader partnerships at “Google I/O 2026.”
  • The “SynthID” verification feature will soon be integrated into “Google Search (Google Lens / Circle to Search)” and “Chrome.”
  • Companies such as OpenAI, Kakao, and ElevenLabs are adopting “SynthID” technology for their AI-generated content.

On Tuesday, May 19, 2026 (local time), Google announced the expansion of its digital watermarking technology, “SynthID,” along with new verification features and ecosystem partnerships during its annual developer conference, “Google I/O 2026.”

The “SynthID” verification feature, which identifies AI-generated content, is already implemented in apps like “Gemini” and is currently in use worldwide. Google plans to extend this functionality to “Google Search (Google Lens / Circle to Search)” and “Chrome” in the near future.

This will allow users to easily verify whether an image they are viewing was generated by AI.

“SynthID” Verification Feature

Furthermore, Google is introducing verification for “C2PA content credentials,” which identify the modification history of content. This feature determines whether content remains in its original, camera-captured state or has been altered by specific tools. It will debut in the “Gemini” app and is scheduled to roll out to “Google Search” and “Chrome” within the coming months.

In a broader industry effort, companies such as OpenAI, Kakao, and ElevenLabs are adopting “SynthID” technology for their AI-generated content, while NVIDIA is also leveraging the technology for its video models. Additionally, through a partnership with Meta to promote the standardization of “C2PA content credentials,” photos and videos captured with the “Pixel Camera” app on Google Pixel devices will be automatically recognized and labeled on “Instagram” as authentic media without AI modifications.
