On October 2, 2025 (Thursday), the “Take a Message” voicemail feature for the default Phone by Google app was launched for the Google Pixel device series (Pixel 6 and later) in four countries: the US, UK, Australia, and Ireland.
Now, it appears that “Take a Message” has finally started rolling out in Japan as of mid-May 2026. I have confirmed that the feature is now active in the “Phone by Google” app on my “Pixel 10.”
However, the rollout currently appears limited to select Google Pixel devices. It is likely a beta version or a staged test rollout.
Please note that while the hold-waiting feature “Hold for Me” and the voicemail feature “Take a Message” have similar names, they are distinct, separate features.

“Take a Message” in the Phone by Google app is a voicemail feature that uses a “Greeting message” to prompt callers to leave a voice recording when you miss a call or decline it. Messages recorded via “Take a Message” are saved to your Google Pixel device and transcribed, allowing you to review voice messages as text.
Furthermore, “Take a Message” includes a feature to detect spam calls from voice messages left by numbers not in your contacts. It is also available on paired “Google Pixel Watch 2” or later models via Bluetooth. In addition to a default greeting, users can record and use their own custom “Greeting messages.”
The “Take a Message” feature in the Phone by Google app is expected to expand across Japan in the coming months. Please be aware that while “Take a Message” serves as an alternative to carrier-provided paid voicemail services, it does not function if the device is turned off or offline.
