On Tuesday, May 12, 2026 (local time), Google announced three new OS and app verification features to be introduced in the next-generation operating system, “Android 17.”

The three features unveiled for Android 17 are Android OS verification, official Google app verification, and comprehensive system and app protection. Please note that features other than the official Google app verification will be introduced exclusively for Google Pixel devices.

Android OS Verification

The Android OS verification feature is an official Google build verification tool designed to protect users and their devices from modified operating systems created by malicious third parties posing as official Google software.

This feature verifies whether the running OS has been officially distributed by Google and notifies the user accordingly. This Android OS verification feature will be rolled out first to Google Pixel devices.

Official Google App Verification

To verify the authenticity of genuine Google apps and Google Mobile Services (GMS) APIs, Google will provide an “append-only public ledger” that is auditable by anyone.

Any apps not included in this “append-only public ledger” can be immediately identified and excluded as spoofed apps posing as genuine Google software.

Comprehensive System and App Protection

For Google Pixel devices, combining the existing “Pixel System Image Transparency” with these newly announced features will allow for cryptographic proof that both the OS and the apps are official, production-ready versions.

This ensures the overall integrity of the Google Pixel device.
