On Tuesday, May 12, 2026 (local time), Google announced a significant upgrade to its “Google built-in” automotive platform.

The upgraded “Google built-in” experience will feature visual improvements for media apps such as “YouTube Music” and “Spotify,” mirroring the complete redesign of Android Auto. It also includes a “YouTube” app that automatically switches to audio-only background playback once the vehicle is in motion. Support for video conferencing apps like “Zoom” is also expected to arrive later in 2026.

Furthermore, through close collaboration with car manufacturers, the upgraded “Google built-in” will allow “Gemini” to answer specific user questions about their vehicles—ranging from identifying mysterious dashboard warning lights to determining whether a new television will fit in the trunk.

Additionally, a new live lane guidance feature will be rolled out, which analyzes road conditions via the vehicle’s front-facing camera. This will further enhance the immersive navigation (“Immersive Navigation”) by identifying the current lane and providing real-time advice for lane changes and upcoming exits.
