On Tuesday, May 12, 2026 (local time), Google announced a comprehensive overhaul of its car operating system, “Android Auto.”

The revamped “Android Auto” is built on the “Material 3 Expressive” design language and introduces a host of new UI elements and features, such as personalized design components, widgets, and a “Google Maps” interface that extends edge-to-edge across the dashboard. Widgets, in particular, are a long-awaited feature that was previously unavailable in “Android Auto.”

Widget Support

Additionally, the UI in the updated “Android Auto” has been optimized to fit various screen configurations, including rectangular, circular, and other specialized display shapes.

Immersive Navigation

The overhauled “Android Auto”

At the core of the new “Android Auto” is “Immersive Navigation,” representing the biggest update to Google Maps navigation in over a decade.

“Immersive Navigation” renders surrounding buildings, terrain, and multi-level intersections in vivid 3D. It also highlights critical road information necessary for driving decisions, such as lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs.

Immersive Navigation

While “Immersive Navigation” was initially rolled out for the Android and iOS versions of the “Google Maps” app in the United States, it is now expanding to the newly revamped “Android Auto.”

YouTube App Support

YouTube App Support

“Android Auto” has not supported the YouTube app in the past, but it is finally adding support, allowing users to watch videos.

However, video playback is restricted to when the vehicle is stopped or parked, such as while charging an electric vehicle. That said, video does not simply stop when driving starts; instead, it transitions to audio-only playback using background audio. This behavior applies not only to the YouTube app but to any app that supports background audio.

Background audio transition

By late 2026, compatible vehicles from manufacturers including BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo are expected to support 60fps Full HD video playback in the YouTube app. Furthermore, select models from BMW, Genesis, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo will support immersive spatial sound using Dolby Atmos technology for compatible apps.

That is not all. Media apps like “YouTube Music” and “Spotify” will also receive visual enhancements.

Gemini and Gemini Intelligence

Gemini Intelligence

The newly overhauled “Android Auto” goes beyond just looks and sound; it is, of course, powered by Google’s AI, “Gemini.”

Additionally, when an Android device equipped with the next-generation intelligent system “Gemini Intelligence” is connected, users can utilize an “Android Auto” experience with improved situational understanding and needs prediction. For example, when a text message arrives, “Magic Cue” will understand the context, use information from texts, emails, and calendars to find answers, and suggest a one-tap reply containing the appropriate information.

Gemini

Gemini in the new “Android Auto” will also support food ordering, starting with the food delivery service “DoorDash.” For instance, while driving home, you can tell Gemini to “Order my usual fish tacos for pickup from DoorDash,” and by confirming the order with a final tap, you can pick up your food and have it ready to eat as soon as you get home.
